What to know about the Door Handle or Door Latch:
The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. As a result of frequent use, they will eventually collapse and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.
Facts to Note:
Occasionally the visible part of the door handle needs to be changed, and sometimes the mechanism hidden inside the door needs to be changed.
If the exterior door handle doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that the interior door handle is also defective.
If physical damage (such as an accident) has caused the door handle to break, there may also be damage to the door lock switch or door lock actuator.
How to Fix:
Remove the door panel to gain access.
Remove and replace the broken door handle.
Examine door latch and replace if not working.
Check door for proper operation.
Reinstall door panel.
Once you notice that your door is having difficulty opening, you should schedule an inspection. If your exterior door handles stops working entirely, stop trying to use it: trying to force the door can cause further damage. If you notice that your exterior door handle is feeling fragile, you should also schedule an inspection.
Common symptoms indicating you may need to change the Door Handle or Door Latch:
Door will not open.
