Oil pressure regulation makes sure of the longevity of your vehicle; an oil pressure gauge works to ensure that the correct pressure is maintained so that your vehicle bearings are well lubricated, most internal combustion engines rely on this forced lubrication system for normal working over time; this is where the gauge comes into play and the benefits of knowing how it works.
Types of Oil Pressure Gauges and Their Mechanics
There are 2 kinds of oil pressure gauges, which are mechanical and electrical. The electrical kind is found in most modern vehicle, which consists of a gauge itself, an electrical sending unit and a circuit. Inside a mechanical gauge is a spring. The position of this spring is altered by the pressure of the oil indicating rising or falling pressures. The pressure readings in an electrical gauge are altered when electrical signals are sent to the gauge passing through a coil altering the needle arrangements showing the pressure.
Oil Pressure and Viscosity
The pressure of the oil depends on the viscosity of the oil, which is highest when the vehicle has cooled down or turned off or when the speed is really high and has heated up to an extreme (heated oil has lower viscosity). Oil pressure readings of a vehicle are at normal when it is turned on and left to idle for a while.
Checking Your Oil Pressure Gauge
Checking your oil pressure gauge is a relatively simple task. The oil pressure gauge is found next to all the other gauges in front of you if you are the driver and will likely have an oil sign next to it. The first thing you have to do is establish baseline values of a properly functioning engine; this will determine the existing conditions of pressure within the vehicle oil lubrication system. Recommended values are between 20 and 60, the gauge will have readings from 0 to 100.
Variations in Oil Pressure Readings
If the values goes below the recommended engine oil pressure figures it is likely to mean that the car is either over heated or the oil in your lubrication system is less than normal and has to be replenished. If the value increases it means that the engine is cooling down or there is some other serious issues with the system. Commonly you will encounter lower oil pressure readings rather than high, which is a rarity. Whenever the system reads values that are out of the normal range the light on the oil pressure gauge switches on. Modern vehicles have an oil pressure sensor switch which turns this light on to draw your attention to it.
Efficiency of Motor Functioning and Maintenance
The oil pressure readings in speed vehicles is subjective depending on its capacity, therefore manufacturers have developed a system of readings which is a with the RPMs of the car. But whatever your car type for efficient and optimal performance it is important to regularly replace your car oil (as prescribed by your car manual or mechanic). If the oil levels in your car system drop, it will cause the grinding up off bearings and aging of the engine. Therefore it’s always good to know how what works for proper maintenance of your vehicle.
